Feds OK 2 new bridges linking Indiana, Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Federal officials have approved a long-planned project to build two new bridges over the Ohio River to link the Louisville, Ky., area and southern Indiana.

The Federal Highway Administration approval Wednesday was the last hurdle keeping the $2.6 billion project from starting.

One bridge will be built in downtown Louisville and the other on the east side of the metropolitan area. Interchanges also will be upgraded.

The governors of both states hailed the federal approval as another crucial step forward.

An August groundbreaking is expected on the first aspect of the project.

Still pending, however, is federal approval for tolling to help pay for the construction.
