Attorneys seek competency hearing for accused Tucson shooter

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Attorneys in the Tucson mass shooting case of Jared Loughner, accused of killing six people and wounding 13 others including former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, asked a federal judge on Tuesday to order a June 27 competency hearing for the accused gunman.

In a joint filing, prosecutors and defense attorneys asked U.S. District Judge Larry Burns to set the status briefing, as Loughner's confinement in a federal facility in Missouri is set to expire on June 7. Loughner would not be present.
