A blind Chinese activist who was the focus of a nearly monthlong diplomatic standoff says he hopes the Chinese government will conduct a thorough investigation into his illegal punishment for the past seven years.
Chen Guangcheng (chehn gwahng-chung) wrote in an op-ed piece published on The New York Times website Tuesday night that the fundamental question the Chinese government must face is lawlessness. He writes that "China does not lack laws, but the rule of law."
Chen escaped house arrest in China and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, setting off a diplomatic skirmish that ended with his leaving China.
Chen, who is now a fellow at New York University's law school, plans to speak Thursday at the Council on Foreign Relations in Manhattan.
