The Security Council is strongly backing the U.N.'s role in supporting Afghanistan as it takes over full responsibility for the country's security, governance and economic and social development.
A resolution extending the mandate of the U.N.'s political mission in Afghanistan until March 23, 2013 was adopted unanimously Thursday.
The council said the U.N. will continue to lead and coordinate international civilian efforts in Afghanistan and cooperate with NATO's civilian representatives to ensure the protection and promotion of the rights of all Afghans. It will also support the Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process and the organization of future elections if asked by the government.
The Security Council stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to address the challenges in Afghanistan.
