U.S. military officials say it's unclear when charges might be filed in the case of the weekend massacre of 16 Afghan villagers allegedly by a U.S. soldier.
Navy Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman for the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, says there is no timeline in such cases _ that it could take days or weeks to prepare charges. He said Tuesday that the important thing now is to let investigators do their jobs.
Two other officials said they thought it unlikely charges would be announced Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation.
The name of the soldier suspected in the deaths Sunday is being withheld until formal charges are announced.
