Feds: Phoenix police kidnapping data not inflated

A federal government review has concluded that Phoenix police didn't drastically over-report or under-report the number of kidnappings that the department cited in applying for crime-fighting funds.

The data came under scrutiny in 2009, when federal officials received information that the number in 2008 was closer to 50, rather than the 350 the department cited on grant applications. Phoenix police received more than $2.4 million in federal funding.

That information prompted the U.S. Justice Department to launch an investigation and cost the police chief his job last March.

But The Arizona Republic ( http://bit.ly/w7CX7j) reports Wednesday that the review found that for every case that police improperly classified as a kidnapping, there was a bona fide kidnapping case mislabeled as something else.
