(Reuters) - Bob Kerrey, the former Nebraska governor and U.S. senator, said on Wednesday he will run for the U.S. Senate.
The 68-year-old Democrat, who vied for his party's presidential nomination in 1992, said in a statement he planned to file the necessary paperwork this afternoon.
Kerrey's announcement comes after the Democratic incumbent, Senator Ben Nelson, announced he will not seek re-election. The Senate seat is one Republicans have set their sights on picking up in 2012.
