OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada hailed a European Union decision to not classify tar sands crude as more polluting than oil from other sources as "a victory for science", but hinted at trade action if the EU did end up singling out the oil sands later.
"This was certainly a resounding win," Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver told Reuters on Thursday after an EU committee vote in Europe. "It was a victory for science and good policy."
But Oliver said the issue might come up again at a meeting of EU environment ministers, and if "unjustified and discriminatory measures" were ultimately put in place, "we're not going to hesitate to defend our interests."
