Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne says a retired colonel has been charged with stealing $2 million from a fund to help families of national guard soldiers deployed overseas.
A state grand jury indicted 66-year-old James Eugene Burnes of Tempe on fraudulent schemes and artifices, theft of an amount over $25,000 and forgery.
Burnes is accused of diverting millions of dollars from accounts in the name of the Arizona National Guard Family Emergency Fund and the Arizona National Guard Emergency Relief Fund. State prosecutors say he took the money for personal use while he was working as a resource manager with the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs.
The case is set for trial April 3.
Burnes did not immediately return a message left Wednesday.
