A Colorado coroner says a newborn baby's fall to the floor immediately after delivery caused bleeding on the infant's brain and a bruise on his scalp, but it did not cause his death.
The baby's father, Martin Aguirre, has said his child slid off the doctor's hands to the ground during delivery Tuesday at University of Colorado Hospital.
Adams County Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan told KUSA-TV in Denver on Thursday (http://on9news.tv/w4WLun ) that the fall caused bleeding on the infant's brain. But she says his death was caused by complications of the genetic disorder Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome.
Broncucia-Jordan says she made the determination because an autopsy Wednesday revealed no evidence that the baby ever took a breath, and the injury to the baby's brain didn't occur in an area that controls respiratory function.
