Ex-Perdue campaign aide pleads in flights case

The fundraising chief for the 2008 campaign of North Carolina's governor received probation and a fine after entering a felony plea for hiding at least $32,000 in donations to pad another campaign worker's salary.

Peter Reichard of Greensboro had served as finance director and chairman at different points during Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's successful run.

Reichard accepted criminal responsibility for an obstruction of justice count through an Alford plea. A defendant does not admit guilt but concedes there is enough evidence for a conviction and is sentenced as if guilty. His sentence includes 24 months of unsupervised probation and a $25,000 fine.

Wake County prosecutor Colon Willoughby has said Perdue isn't the focus of his investigation, which is continuing. Perdue hasn't spoken about the charge specifically but her campaign said Wednesday it wasn't aware of Reichard's arrangement.
