Oakland police say a 1-year-old child and seven other victims are in the hospital after being shot in the city's West Oakland neighborhood.
Oakland police spokeswoman Ofc. Johnna Watson says the shootings happened just after 6 p.m. Monday in an area not far from the Nimitz Freeway and the U.S. Post Office.
Watson says officers arriving on the scene learned that the victims had been taken to nearby hospitals. She said information on any suspects, a possible motive or the victims' conditions was not immediately available.
KTVU-TV reports that one of the station's cameramen saw more than 50 shell casings at the scene of the shooting.
