A public memorial service for former Procter & Gamble Co. CEO John G. Smale has been scheduled for Dec. 3 in Cincinnati.
Smale died Saturday at age 84. The consumer products company's CEO and chairman in the 1980s, Smale was also a former General Motors Co. chairman and longtime board member.
The Canada-born Miami University graduate was credited with expanding P&G's global businesses and making its operations more efficient. He chaired a task force on Cincinnati infrastructure improvements, and his late wife, Phyllis, had led fundraising efforts to beautify the city. Smale donated $20 million this year to a riverfront park in her honor.
P&G says the memorial service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati. It's requested that memorial donations go to The Cincinnati Parks Foundation.
