Iran rejects UN condemnation of rights record

A top Iranian official is rejecting a U.N. resolution condemning his country's human rights record.

Mohammad Javad Larijani, head of Iran's Human Rights Council, told the U.N. General Assembly on Monday the charges outlined in the resolution were "totally preposterous."

Sponsored by Canada, the resolution was approved 86-32, with 59 abstentions.

The resolution expresses concern over recurring human rights violations in Iran, including torture, amputations and the frequent use of the death penalty.
