Agent charged in Hawaii shooting pleads not guilty

The federal agent charged with murder in the shooting death of a man in a Hawaii McDonald's restaurant has pleaded not guilty.

State Department Special Agent Christopher Deedy was arraigned in Circuit Court in Honolulu on Monday. He did not speak during the brief proceeding.

Defense attorney Brook Hart entered the plea on Deedy's behalf. Deedy remains free on $250,000 bond.

Police say Deedy and Kollin Elderts were involved in an early-morning argument at a Waikiki McDonald's on Nov. 5. The 23-year-old Kailua man died of a single gunshot wound to his chest and the 27-year-old agent was arrested at the scene.

Hart has said the agent was protecting himself and others.

Deedy was in Honolulu to help with security for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
