PRICE TAG: Vermont policymakers are projecting that a government-funded universal health care system would cost between $8.2 billion and $9.5 billion a year _ roughly $13,000 to $14,000 per resident _ by 2020.
GOING PUBLIC: The cost estimate was due by Nov. 1 under a law signed in May that is intended to make Vermont the first state in the nation with fully publicly funded health care.
WHAT'S NEXT?: Lawmakers must still figure out how to pay for the new system. They'll start by seeking the public's input at a series of forums in November and December. No final decision is expected until early 2013.
