The Oakland Tribune, Contra Costa Times and several other newspapers operated by the Bay Area News Group will be keeping their mastheads.
BANG, which operates 12 daily newspapers around San Francisco, had said previously that it would consolidate its East Bay papers into two mastheads and combine the San Mateo County Times under the masthead of the San Jose Mercury News.
The Oakland Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/rLMEYf) that most of the papers will keep their mastheads. BANG officials also said Thursday they would be scaling back the number of layoffs in their East Bay newspapers.
Parent company MediaNews Group had expected to lay off about 40 people in the 230-employee newsroom, but officials said Thursday they now expect staff cuts of about 25 people, along with several voluntary resignations.
