A lawsuit against a United Arab Emirates naval officer who was cleared at a criminal trial of keeping an unpaid Filipino servant at his Rhode Island home can proceed in federal court.
Judge John McConnell Jr. on Tuesday lifted a stay on the lawsuit Elizabeth Cabitla Ballesteros in U.S. District Court in Providence.
In August, a federal judge acquitted Col. Arif Mohamed Saaed (sy-EED') Mohamed Al-Ali of fraud in foreign labor contracting. He had been accused of withholding pay from Ballesteros, who claimed working long hours in Al-Ali's rented East Greenwich home. He denied the allegations.
The lawsuit names Al-Ali and his wife, Samah Alharmoodi. Ballesteros accuses them of violating federal human trafficking laws.
The civil case was put on hold in June while the criminal case proceeded.
