A former colleague of a campaign operative accused of cheating New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg out of more than $1 million says the defendant supervised at least 75 poll-watchers.
The defense witness says John Haggerty was among a handful of people who spent a tense evening with the mayor as results in the close 2009 race came in.
Karen Persichilli Keough testified Monday.
She says she arrived at Bloomberg's headquarters at 5 a.m. on Election Day to volunteer as a poll-watcher. She says she saw Haggerty giving guidance to the volunteers, who were assigned polling sites and were given two-way radios and cars with drivers.
Haggerty denies allegations he mounted only a meager operation so he could use the money to buy a house.
