Official wants LA jail deputies to wear cameras

A Los Angeles County official is calling for sweeping new measures in the jail system and wants sheriff's deputies to wear portable video cameras any time they interact with inmates.

Supervisor Gloria Molina said Friday she will introduce a motion next week in an attempt to address some of the concerns raised in recent weeks about jail conditions.

Civil rights lawyers say inmates are routinely beaten up by violent deputies who are given little supervision and often go unpunished for their behavior.

Molina says deputies should be barred from carrying heavy-duty flashlights, which can be used as batons. Deputies would also be barred from wearing steel-toed shoes and forbidden from making any head strikes.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida had not seen the motion, so could not comment.
