Ex-NYPD officer's wife acquitted of his murder

A New York City woman who acknowledged shooting her retired police officer husband to death but said she did so in self-defense has been acquitted of his murder.

But the Queens jury on Thursday convicted Barbara Sheehan of a weapons charge that will result in some prison time.

Her supporters cheered as the verdict was read. Many were dressed in purple to express support for domestic violence victims.

Barbara Sheehan says she shot her husband of 24 years, Raymond, after suffering decades of physical and verbal abuse. She says he threatened to kill her, and he meant it.

Prosecutors say she wasn't abused. They say she was angry over her husband's infidelities.

Authorities say she fired 11 times while Raymond Sheehan was shaving in the bathroom.
