NY Amish wreck driver indicted on more charges

An upstate New York man arrested after the deaths of six Amish farmers in a wreck last summer on a rural road has been indicted on more serious charges.

Yates County prosecutors say Monday a grand jury indicted 42-year-old Steven Eldridge of Penn Yan on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and assault. He was also indicted for driving while ability impaired by drugs and reckless driving.

The most serious charge Eldridge originally faced was criminally negligent homicide.

Police say he was driving in the Finger Lakes town of Benton on July 19 when he passed a tractor on a curve and ran into a van carrying 13 Amish farmers.

He'll be arraigned Oct. 14. A call to the county public defender's office was not answered.
