A third inmate is charged in the April killing of a South Dakota prison guard who died after he was hit with a metal pipe and his mouth covered with plastic wrap.
Michael Nordman made his first court appearance Thursday on first-degree and felony murder charges. Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf.
Prosecutors say the 47-year-old Nordman supplied the pipe and plastic wrap used in the slaying of 63-year-old guard Ronald Johnson.
Two other inmates are accused of attacking Johnson inside the Sioux Falls prison and using his uniform in an unsuccessful escape attempt. Eric Robert has pleaded guilty. Rodney Berget has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against both men. They have until Oct. 31 to decide whether to do so in Nordman's case.
