Marine offered FDNY application deadline extension

A Marine who was awarded the Medal of Honor says he wants to become a New York City firefighter but missed the application deadline. So his lawyer asked a federal judge to extend the application period for all aspiring firefighters.

The lawyer says the judge agreed on Monday to a 24-hour extension for Sgt. Dakota Meyer to submit an application _ but only to accommodate him. The lawyer, Keith Sullivan, says Meyers doesn't want to be a "one-person exception" to the deadline and won't apply.

Sullivan say Meyers missed the deadline because he was traveling and attending events surrounding his Medal of Honor, which he received from President Barack Obama on Sept. 15.

Sullivan tells The Associated Press in an email that he is weighing "what possible legal recourses may remain."
