NYPD officer in ticket probe climbs on train track

Authorities say a New York Police Department officer caught up in a criminal investigation into ticket fixing climbed onto a subway track and tried to touch the third rail in an apparent suicide attempt.

Other officers discovered him before dawn Wednesday at a subway station near his Bronx home. He's hospitalized with minor injuries.

Two people familiar with the probe say the officer testified last week before a grand jury investigating the possible misconduct. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the proceedings are secret and haven't been completed.

Prosecutors suspect the officers arranged for traffic tickets to be torn up before the cases reached court as favors or possibly in exchange for bribes.

Police union officials have criticized prosecutors for turning allegations of ticket fixing into a criminal matter.

The NYPD hasn't commented.
