Weak earthquake recorded in central Alabama

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.0-magnitude earthquake has been reported in central Alabama.

The quake struck just before 6 p.m. Tuesday and was centered about 10 miles northeast of Birmingham.

A police dispatcher tells The Birmingham News ( http://bit.ly/npGg8) that they received a few calls from residents who felt the tremor but had not received any reports of structural damage.

Last month, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Virginia shook people from Georgia to Canada. It was the strongest quake to strike the East Coast since World War II.
