San Bruno residents to remember 8 killed in blast

Survivors of the nation's deadliest pipeline accident in a decade are bracing themselves to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the explosion at a poignant community gathering Friday to honor the eight lives lost in the blast.

San Bruno residents will gather at Skyline College for a somber remembrance ceremony a few minutes before the milestone passes Friday evening.

Two days later, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, community members will come together for a reunion in a nearby park.

The Sept. 9, 2010 blast killed eight men and women, injured dozens and sparked a fireball that torched 38 homes in a neighborhood overlooking San Francisco Bay.

City Mayor Jim Ruane says the events will serve as therapy for the bedroom community, which is still recovering from the tragedy.
