NY sentencing set for last of 4 in FBI sting

The last of four men convicted in an FBI sting operation aimed at New York City synagogues is set for sentencing two months after his codefendants were sent to prison.

The sentencing of Laguerre Payen (lah-GAYR' PAY'-en) was delayed until Wednesday so a psychiatric analysis could be conducted on him. All were convicted at trial earlier this year.

Federal Judge Colleen McMahon in June sentenced three others to 25 years in prison in the phony plot to blow up synagogues and shoot down military planes. She said the federal government created acts of terrorism out of one of the drug offenders' fantasies of bravado and bigotry and then made those fantasies come true. The case grew after the FBI in 2008 assigned an informant to infiltrate a mosque in Newburgh.
