Burned body identified as Indiana stabbing suspect

Police say a body found burned beyond recognition in a car after a police chase in northern Indiana is that of a suspect in two stabbings.

Elkhart County Chief Deputy Coroner James Elliott said Wednesday that Indiana State Police laboratories used DNA to identify the body as 31-year-old Francisco Macias of Goshen.

Police last week said Macias stabbed two women in Elkhart Aug. 22, and that he was a person of interest in a house fire the same day that killed three people.

Elkhart Police Department Lt. Laura Koch said Thursday that she can't comment on how the various crimes are connected because the investigation is ongoing.

Coroner John White ruled Macias' death a suicide but had said police asked him not to discuss what led him to that conclusion.
