Officials: Hiker's body found in Grand Canyon

Officials say a hiker's body has been found in the Grand Canyon after a pair of backpackers reportedly encountered a man who appeared fatigued on a long, rugged trail.

The Arizona Republic reports that rangers on Sunday sent helicopters along the Tanner Trail after two people said that days earlier they had seen a man exhausted and unprepared to hike in triple-digit heat but still insistent on continuing his trek. The encounter happened Friday, with the pair of hikers not seeing the man again but passing his pack and jotting down his permit information, which they gave to rangers.

Searchers found a body that matched the man's description in a wash Sunday. His name has not been released.

The Coconino County medical examiner is expected to determine the cause of death.
