Factbox: Irene cuts power to 2 million customers on East Coast

(Reuters) - More than two million homes and businesses along the East Coast lost power as Hurricane Irene churned northward toward New York City and New England, according to reports from power companies.

Irene, packing sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (130 km/hour), was a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale and was churning north-northeast at 17 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
