DC utility predicts widespread outages for days

The power company that has nearly 780,000 customers in the nation's capital and surrounding suburbs is telling people to brace for widespread outages that couldn't be repaired for days because of the destruction from Hurricane Irene.

Pepco Holdings CEO Joseph M. Rigby said in an email on Friday that Irene has the possibility of causing significant damage to the company's electrical infrastructure.

Rigby said assessing damage and estimating when customers will be restored could take as long as a full day after the heart of the storm has moved through.

The utility has been dogged in the past by outages that have left thousands in the dark, sometimes for days, in the Washington suburbs.
