NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City's mass transit system, which serves eight million riders a day, will be shut ahead of Hurricane Irene at approximately noon on Saturday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Friday.

The shutdown includes subways, buses and commuter lines that serve the surrounding suburbs, and the loss of mass transit could complicate any possible evacuations.
