Beer comes to Oktoberfest in long-dry Ala. city

Beer is coming to Oktoberfest for the first time _ at least to one Alabama city's version of the famously beer-soaked German festival.

Cullman is an industrial and farming center founded by German immigrants in the 19th century. It has held an Oktoberfest annually since 1977. But unlike at the signature event held in Munich every year, there was never any beer, because the city and Cullman County banned alcohol sales for decades.

That changed last November, when voters approved a referendum to lift the sales ban.

The Cullman Times reports ( the city council recently approved a special event license to sell beer and wine at an indoor beer garden during the festival, which is set for Oct. 1-8.
