The planned sale of a New Hampshire resort where the first-in-the-nation presidential primary ballots have been cast for 50 years has fallen through.
The Tillotson Corp. board of directors said Thursday that Ocean Properties has decided not to purchase the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch.
The 150-year-old hotel has been owned by the Tillotson family since 1954. Board members say they were surprised by the news but still plan to find a new owner for the hotel.
Neil Tillotson had Dixville incorporated solely for voting purposes and arranged for ballots to be cast just after midnight on primary day. In doing so, he stole some of the spotlight from another tiny northern New Hampshire community, Hart's Location, which began midnight voting in 1948.
