The U.S. Navy says it has ended the search for a 21-year-old sailor from Tennessee who went missing from the USS Boxer in the Gulf of Aden.
His family is holding a memorial service for him in Nashville.
The Navy said in a statement that it ended the search on Friday for Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) 2nd Class Matthew Bergman of Franklin. He failed to report for duty on July 26.
The Navy said it conducted extensive searches of the ship and water, but expectations for recovery no longer existed.
His father, Joseph Bergman, said his son was an Arab linguist who had been temporarily assigned to the San Diego-based USS Boxer.
A public memorial for Bergman is scheduled for Saturday.
