West Point plans new $131M barrack for cadets

The U.S. Military Academy has plans to ease overcrowding in West Point's cadet barracks.

Col. Mark Tarsa, the academy's garrison commander, tells the Times Herald-Record of Middletown ( http://bit.ly/nZNtsO) that West Point plans to start construction on a $131 million barrack building in 2013.

He says 40 percent of the Corps of Cadets has three people sleeping in a two-person room.

Overcrowding can be unhealthy as well as uncomfortable. The newspaper reports that last year, former commandant Maj. Gen. Bill Rapp said overcrowding led to a diarrhea outbreak that kept dozens of cadets out of class.
