Police say an AWOL Muslim soldier from Fort Campbell, Ky., who had been granted conscientious objector status has been arrested in Texas on a child pornography charge.
Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith says Pfc. Naser Abdo (AB'-doh) was jailed Thursday after his arrest a day before at a motel in the city near Fort Hood. She declined to release further details.
Abdo has been absent without leave since July 4th weekend.
The 21-year-old infantry soldier cited religious beliefs in applying for conscientious objector status last year. A military review board recommended in June he be separated from the Army.
The discharge was delayed because of the pornography charge. Abdo has said he thought he was charged with a crime because he sought to leave the Army as a conscientious objector.
