A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Joseph Pitts says the eastern Pennsylvania Republican has donated $4,000 in political contributions to charity after learning they came from two men accused of being agents of Pakistan's intelligence service.
The FBI arrested Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday. He's director of the Kashmiri American Council in Washington. Authorities say he and Zaheer Ahmad, who is believed to be living in Pakistan, are charged with conspiring to act as agents of a foreign country without registering with the U.S. government.
Pitts spokesman Andrew Wimer says in Thursday's editions of the Reading Eagle newspaper that the two men misrepresented where they were getting the money from. The contributions, made in 2004, would be illegal if the men are found guilty.
