Mom in custody for homicide after kids, home alone, die in fire

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - A Pennsylvania woman whose two young children died in a fire after they were left alone in a home without a smoke detector was in custody on homicide charges, police said on Thursday.

After being sought by police following the June 30 fire, Kiaira Pollard, 27, turned herself in late on Wednesday to Allegheny County police, police Lieutenant Andy Schurman said.

Pollard allegedly left her two sons, KiDonn, 7, and KrisDon, 4, alone at her North Versailles apartment, where a fire broke out on June 30. Police found KiDonn dead, and KrisDon died later.

The apartment's smoke detector was missing, according to police.

Pollard has been charged with two counts of homicide, child endangerment, and tampering with a fire apparatus, Schurman said.
