AP sources: Rebels gaining on Gadhafi regime

U.S. officials tell The Associated Press that Libyan rebels have seized a number of western mountain towns, cutting off the Gadhafi regime's access to a key oil pipeline.

The U.S. officials estimate that fuel for the military and the public in Tripoli will start running out within one month. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

The officials say that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime is running out of cash to pay its military and government ministers, citing small civil protests breaking out in Tripoli. The officials also say that, based on Gadhafi troops who have been captured or have defected, morale among soldiers is also poor.

France's foreign minister said Tuesday that Libyan emissaries report that Gadhafi is prepared to leave power.
