Miami expressway reopens after possible bomb scare

Authorities have reopened a stretch of expressway in Miami-Dade County after closing it for hours to check on possible explosives in an abandoned vehicle.

The Palmetto Expressway was shut down in both directions starting late Friday afternoon.

Miami Gardens Police Capt. Ralph Suarez said Friday night that officers found an abandoned silver hearse on a street beneath the expressway. When the officers looked inside, they saw some firearms or other weapons. Authorities weren't immediately saying what the officers found, but it was enough to make them call in the Miami-Dade Police bomb squad.

WSVN-TV reported that the highway was reopened in both directions late Friday night. The news station reports police are looking for a man who was seen leaving the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
