Maryland closes highway over report of armed man

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maryland closed a major north-south highway on Wednesday as police searched for an armed suspect spotted along the road, Maryland state police said.

State and Anne Arundel County police were looking for the suspect in the area of I-295 and Route 195 in Anne Arundel County, a state police statement said. I-295 was closed in both directions at Route 195 south of Baltimore.

Calls to police began shortly before 11:30 a.m. local time, reporting a man armed with a shotgun or rifle along the highway at that location.

While it was not immediately known if shots were fired, it is believed the suspect may have used a hammer to break windows of a vehicle parked in the area, police said. No injuries have been reported.

The suspect was described as a white male, between 50 and 60 yrs old, in a black and red flannel shirt and blue jeans. The search involved teams of sniffer dogs, helicopters and police officers on foot.
