Promoting the upcoming start of historical tours on campus, University of Vermont officials are turning over the campus green to 11 sheep.
The third season of the popular historic tour program kicks off Saturday at the Burlington college. Sheep brought in from the local Shelburne Farms were allowed free rein Friday to graze on the 10-acre green. The scene conjured up the university's earliest days, when livestock from nearby farms grazed on campus because the grass was considered the best in the area.
The university was founded in 1791 and is the fifth oldest in New England. More than a dozen buildings on its central grounds are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The tours run through Oct. 15.
