White House: Budget talks 'in abeyance'

The White House is declaring the bipartisan deficit talks with Congress "in abeyance" following the departure of a key Republican from the negotiations. Officials say the discussion might now move up to congressional leaders and President Barack Obama.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday the talks had worked as expected by identifying areas of common ground. He says Obama met with House Speaker Boehner Wednesday evening in part to discuss the status of the budget talks. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with House Democratic leaders Thursday morning.

Carney told reporters traveling on Air Force One that Obama insists on a deal that reduces the long-term deficit by using both spending cuts and increased tax revenues. House Republican leader Eric Cantor of Virginia walked out of the budget negotiations, citing his opposition to any tax increases.
