Rhode Island prison officials have offered their first glimpse of a renovated facility for women inmates.
The Department of Corrections offered the media a tour of the prison building on Friday.
Female inmates classified as medium security or awaiting trial moved into the renovated facility in December. The building is located on the grounds of the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.
Officials say it cost $624,000 to renovate the former mental health hospital, compared to the more than $50 million it would have cost to build a new prison.
Designed to house 175 inmates, a spokeswoman says the prison currently has about 200 female inmates.
The building will eventually be named the Gloria McDonald Women's Awaiting Trial and Medium Security Facility.
