Diabetic bodybuilder subdued by police gets $217K

A California jury says a bodybuilder who was in the throes of a diabetic emergency when he was roughed up by Redwood City police should get $217,000.

The federal jury decided Thursday afternoon that police violated the diabetic bodybuilder's civil rights during a confrontation at a Redwood City movie theater four years ago.

The Palo Alto Daily News reports that 50-year-old Doug Burns sued Officer Jaime Mateo, Sgt. David Gough and the city claiming he was disoriented and staggering because of a diabetic emergency when the officers used pepper spray and wrestled him to the ground.

The jury agreed that the officers used excessive force.

The city claimed police believed Burns posed a threat because of his build and behavior.
