LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Immigration agents are issuing inspection notices to 1,000 U.S. employers whose businesses have a key role in keeping national infrastructure safe, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said on Wednesday.

It did not name the targeted businesses but said 17 sectors singled out for the enforcement action include agriculture and food, financial services, commercial nuclear reactors, drinking water and water treatment, postal and shipping, healthcare and transportation.

"The inspections will touch on employers of all sizes and in every state in the nation, with an emphasis on businesses related to critical infrastructure and key resources," ICE said in a statement.
