CONWAY, Mass (Reuters) - Gun shots were heard at a home in central Maine on Monday and police later found the bodies of a man, woman and two children inside.
Authorities were summoned to the house in Dexter, Maine in the morning to check on its residents, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police.
"When they got there, they heard what they thought were gun shots and backed off," he told Reuters.
"The State Police tactical team entered the house sometime in early afternoon and found the bodies of four people inside - a man, woman and two children," McCausland added.
He did not identify the victims and declined to say whether police knew if the deceased were members of the same family.
The State Police tactical team deals with the most dangerous calls in Maine, he said.
Dexter, Maine is located 62 miles north of the capital, Augusta.
