KANSAS CITY, Mo (Reuters) - The death toll from the May 22 tornado in Joplin, Missouri has reached 153, according to a city statement on Monday.
That number is up from 151 reported by Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel late last week. The full list was complied by Chappel and the Missouri Department of Public Safety, said Lynn Onstot, public information officer for Joplin.
The toll has increased as people die of injuries. Some have died due to a fungal infection from debris that contained soil or plant matter, officials have said.
One of the deaths is of a police officer struck by lightning while helping at the scene the day after the tornado.
